Using New Google Analytics Advanced Segmentation

The days of looking at aggregate data to determine trends, behaviors or performance are long gone. Let’s face it, aggregate data just doesn’t give you reliable, insightful or actionable data anymore. So the solution has come at a time when marketeers can’t avoid it any longer – SEGMENTATION. For years, we had to apply custom filters to Profiles in Google Analytics in order to gain a more clear look into the objective of a marketing campaign, such as stacking paid traffic next to organic traffic. Using the new Advanced Segmentation features in Google Analytics is a great (and easy) way to begin segmenting your traffic within minutes.

Since the whole idea of Segmentation is tailored towards dividing something into separate parts or sections, Analytical Segmentation is no different. Let’s take a look at how you can begin applying Advanced Segments to some common examples...

Well Friends, if you’ve ever found that happening with you too, then you’re not alone (and most of us have), you’re really going to appreciate what ‘Da Genius Marketer said I could give you today for being a loyal subscriber.

How It all began

I can't help but believe in destiny when I think of the way I got into SEO. Around five years back, when I took up my first job on Internet marketing and SEO here in Kolkata, I hardly had any clue about what is SEO, or how to optimize a website..for that matter, at that point of time there were very few people in kolkata who knew anything about SEO.

Though I had a First Class in my Hotel Mgmt course and also a job offer from Hyatt Regency, Kolkata, I just felt that hoteleering is not for me .. I was kind of frustrated with rejections from otherjobs (mostly call centers) and was looking for an alternative avenue when I came across the advertisement from 123greetings.com - they were looking for people in their internet marketing team and i made it through with them-- then it all began..

It was just three of us at that point and then everyday new members joined their marketing team and the only way we could know about SEO , link exchange and other internet marketing was to study..yes, that is something I hate, but I had to.. and surprisingly enough, I was never bored studying about SEO, Inetrnet marketing, link exchange and related stuff.. (even today!). That was a golden opportunity....being one of the pioneer members of the SEO and internet marketing team of 123greetings.com gave me a lot of scope to study and experiement and learn the basics.

While doing this job, I got some offers from other smaller web dev companies in Kolkata and started working as a freelance SEO / SEO consultant with them. But the money was too less.. :( I am sure most freshers today would prefer to sit back at home rather than working for someone for such a meager salary.. so I was in dilemma, I loved SEO but I needed more money and atlast the hunt was on.. I needed a new job....

Cracked interviews with some call centers and moved on to work with them but didn't give up on SEO, I was working as a SEO consultant/ SEO freelancer for the Kolkata based web development companies..and always kept myself updated about the changes and updates in the search engines. I spent a nice time in Call centers in Mumbai (almost 2 years), earned good money.. but my heart was lying in something else , I wanted to come back to SEO and Internet marketing...

In October 2004 when I was back in Kolkata for a vacation, one of the companies, Digital Avenues, for which I used to freelance as SEO offered me to join them as a full timer. The offer was there for me for the last 6 months but I never gave it a thought but this time.. they had something really good to offer.. in addition, I was allured by the options of working as a full time SEO as well as staying in my favorite city Kolkata.. thought about the whole thing for a couple of days and then I agreed.

That again marked the beginning of a new chapter in my career and life.. I started working on something that I love to do-- had a lot of challenges to win.. and eventually things started to work out.. With decent SEO success on the initial inhouse projects like My Corporate Logo, we started getting external projects which turned out equally successful and now we have a project coming in almost every 15 days. Tiil today I am with Digital Avenues.. from a one member SEO team now we have a growing SEO team of 6 members and am sure there's lot to look forward to.

HTML Color Codes Chart - How To Find Hexadecimal Color Code

I have always advocated the use of Notepad for people willing to learn HTML properly and recently one of my cousins who have just started learning HTML and is diligently sticking to the notepads, avoiding the lure of easy WYSIWYG editors came back to me with a problem."How can I find the proper HTML color code when coding in notepad"

Instead of giving him a short answer I thought I would make a post here on HTML color codes so that it can be of help to so many other people who are also stuck with issues and doubts about these strange looking hexadecimal color codes.

Though I mentioned them as "strange looking hexadecimal codes" they are not really strange and are rather pretty logically formed. In HTML, at times we use names of colors like, red, blue, green etc but more often than not we use Hexadecimal color codes to add more precise colors on the web pages.Let's look at what is the logic behind Hexadecimal HTML color codes..

HTML color codes are formed basically of three primary colors - Red , Green and Blue, otherwise referred to as RGB. In all the hexa decimal color codes you will typically see six characters, for example #ff6633 - in this case the first two character defines value for red, the next two for Green and the last two for blue. If you would go through a HTML color code chart you will notice that lower numbers and letters display darker colors ( Black: #000000 ). So if we would like to have a bright red color we would have the code as #FF0000 - which would mean to the browser maximum Red ( FF) No Blue (00), No green (00). If you can keep a few basic color codes in mind you can probably do some permutation and combination based on the above mentioned facts to get other color variations. It is important that we append the # before the color code.

How to get the exact HTML color codes

a) When you are creating a webpage from a design, open it in Photoshop and use the color picker tool to click on the color of your choice, it will show you the HTML color code for that. A color picker tool is available on all graphic design applications and this is the easiest way to do this.

b) HTML color code charts - Yes, readymade HTML color code charts are available on the web. A small Google search and you can find a lot of them. Some of them list almost all possible colors and variations along with their hexadecimal code for HTML. So a simple search and then a copy paste job can resolve the issue. Check this HTML color code chart for reference: http://www.webmonkey.com/reference/Color_Charts

Black Hat SEO

You may have heard the term "black hat techniques" or "black hat seo", but what exactly does this coined phrase mean?

Anything that deceives Search Engines and/or the end user is "Black Hat SEO". This would include artificial link building, fake traffic, page redirects that take the user to a totally unrelated website then what he/she thought they were going to, mirror sites, hidden links and text, keyword stuffing of title, meta, alt image tags, spamming, etc.

These techniques should never be considered as they will get your site banned from the search engines.

Be very cautious when considering to work with any SEO consultant or SEO firm that implements these unethical seo techniques or "guarantee's" top search engine rankings. Always check references and look for consultants or firms that practice "ethical SEO implementation".

AdSense - Invalid clicks

AdSense - Invalid clicksIt's possible that you have some clicks , and Google's monitoring system has considered it as AdSense - Invalid clicks.
As I' ve mentioned before in my previous Adesnes Tips post , Google monitor all clicks and impressions on Google ads for any activity that may artificially drive up an advertiser's costs or a publisher's earnings.
Because Google dose not charge for any Invalid clicks so google also not pay you. You can check all Invalid clicks on 'Overview' page, under the Reports tab of you Adsense account.

What if I accidentally clicked on my own ads.
Although publishers are not permitted to click on their own ads for any reason, Google do understand that accidental clicks may occur. We therefore don't require that you contact us every time you click on your ads. Rest assured that your account is being properly credited for all clicks and impressions we consider to be valid.

So how can you be VICTIM of Invalid clicks

  1. If you click on your website google ads FROM YOUR PC (same PC, which you use to login into Adsense Account).

  2. If someone frequently clicks on your website adsense ads for ard. 5 - 10 times a day for ard. 5 - 6 days regularly.

  3. If you send E-mail that requested to click on your site Google ads.

  4. Ignore Adsense Program Policies & TOS

  5. Buy, write, or use click-bot software. Click-bot software will go around your site and click on your ads. Most of the times, these click-bots are using proxies to avoid detection.

  6. Extra words to make your visitors to notice your ads. Write “Click here” or “Please support us” or “Visit our sponsors”. Anything other than Google-approved “sponsored links” or “advertisements”.

  7. Put your adsense code in email the email, usenet, RSS, etc.

Gateway page
Also called a "doorway page" or a "bridge page". A gateway page is a low quality web page that contains very little content and exists solely for the purpose of driving traffic to another page. This is done through spamdexing, spamming the index of a search engine. Gateway pages are often easy to identify in that they have been designed primarily for search engines, not for human beings.

Google’s success should be attributed to its unique algorithmic ranking system PageRank – a system that assigns a score to a web page based on the number of links to that page.

Based in Mountain View, California the company now employs 13,748 people. The company has a relaxed corporate atmosphere that is illustrated in the companies philosophy "Don't be evil".

Central to Google's profitability is Google Adwords launched in 2000. Google Adwords are text-based contextual ads relevant to keyword searches. In 2006 the company earned $10.492 billion in total advertising revenues about 90 times the revenue from other Google ventures.

Google bombing
Google Bombing is when a group of sites such as blogs join forces to link to an unflattering page about a company such that this page rises to the top of the search results in Google. Google bombing takes advantage of the power of hyperlink text and of PageRank. For example, if a group of sites with high PageRank all link to a page about XYZ Company's inappropriate behavior with hyperlink text of "XYZ Company sucks" then the linked page can shoot to the top of Google's search results for the term "XYZ Company."

Google Bowling
Google Bowling is a black hat SEO technique used to knock competitors down or out of search engine results.

It is a form of SEO sabotage that is conducted by pointing hundreds of questionable links from low quality sites at a competitor's site so they end up banned or penalized by Google.

Generally newer sites are more susceptible to Google Bowling as older sites are better established with a range of existing high quality links.

Google Dance
The Google Dance refers to when Google indexes are updated. This period of time often results in fluctuations in the index size and some noticeable changes in search engine result positions.

The term Google Dance was adopted as while an update is being processed the position of a website in Google seems to "dance" as it fluctuates. The fluctuation is due to each of Google's nine datacenters being updated out of sync - meaning for a time the results are different.

The primary measure of a pages importance is the number and quality of links pointing to that page. Pages in the Supplemental Index can still rank in search results, but this will depend on the number of pages in the main index relevant to the search.

Some reasons pages may be in the Google Supplemental Index:
* Duplicate content
* Low PageRank
* Lack of trust
* A site with a large number of pages
* Page freshness

The formula for Google AdSense calculation

Here is an explanation about the Google AdSense calculation formula to help new AdSense beginners to understand and optimize their AdSense revenues.

- Click through rate (CTR): is the number of clicks an ad unit receives divided by the number of times the ad unit is shown (impressions).

- Effective CPM (eCPM) : is the cost per 1000 impressions, CPM is a useful way to compare revenue across different channels and advertising programs. It is calculated by dividing total earnings by the number of impressions in thousands.

- Impressions: represents the number of times an ad is displayed on Google or on sites or products in Google’s ad network. A page impression is counted each time an ad unit is displayed on a publisher’s site. Page impressions are used when calculating reports for AdSense publishers, rather than ad impressions

- Clicks: the number of generated clicks by all your ads.

- Earnings: is total money that would be given by Google AdSense for publishers who participate in their affiliate programs.

- Earnings Per Click (EPC) : this is the average cost per click that would be given to publishers depends on the advertiser’s bid, sum of the click, page impressions. However, it’s still being a Google AdSense Secret.

The formula for Google AdSense calculation is:

CTR = (Clicks / Impressions) * 100
EPC = Earnings per Click

eCPM = (Earnings / Impressions) * 1000
eCPM = CTR * EPC * 10

Earnings = eCPM * Impressions / 1000
Earnings = CTR * EPC * Impressions / 100

Example: I’ve got 31 clicks for 1700 impressions with an EPC of 0.05 $

CTR = (31 / 1700) * 100 = 1.82352 = 1.83 %

eCPM = 1.82352 * 0.05 * 10 = 0.91176 = 0.92 $
eCPM = (1.55 / 1700) * 1000 = 0.9117 = 0.92 $

Earnings = 0.91176 * 1700 / 1000 = 1.549992 = 1.55 $
Earnings = 1.82352 * 0.05 * 1700 / 100 = 1.549992 = 1.55 $

7 Affiliate Marketing Mistakes You Should Avoid

  1. Thinking that just because someone sees an affiliate's links that they will visit the site. It is understood that an affiliates job is only to be part of the pre-selling of the connection, pre-selling is more involved than only having the link on there web page or message. It is also suppose to encourage others to visit the affiliate's site. This encouragement can be provided by giving favorable recommendations about the site or the products offered or by providing some other kind of information which will entice readers to want to check out the other site.
  2. Believing that people will naturally just visit your site. This principal is often referred to as organic traffic and it is just a myth. You can not expect people to find a web site just by having it in one location. In order to get people to visit a web site, you have to help them find it. You can do this by developing an effective marketing campaign and also skillful uses of SEO to increase rankings on web searches.
  3. Assuming that you only need one marketing strategy to be successful. There are some people that believe that with only a few changes to their strategy, they will experience an increase in traffic. This is not the case and could be a fatal mistake to your company. You must have a flexible and varied strategy that can tap into different segments of your targeted market. You need to reach all aspects of your target audience and thus should try a variety of approaches to be successful.
  4. Not reviewing and modifying your marketing strategy. Most affiliates worry more about the bottom line and whether they are making a profit or not. They do not look at the overall campaign and try to figure out what aspects are working and which ones are not. You need to study all aspects of your strategy to make sure each is performing as expected. Are you getting the visitors you need? Is the product as good as you thought? Are you getting return visitors? The use of visitor tracking software can provide you information about what your visitors are doing and provide you possible ways to improve their experiences and your chance to make a sale.
  5. Believing that all products are actually sellable. You need to find affiliate programs that actually have something worth selling. Some programs offer a 90% commission on sales, but if you can not sell any, there is no profit to be earned.
  6. Believing all affiliate programs will work. An affiliate program with a good reputation with its customer target group will have a higher chance for success than one with a questionable reputation. It is easier to pre-sell the affiliate's program if the products are dependable and well receive in the market place.
  7. Not staying informed of the newest trends and improvements in your industry. In whatever field you are involved, improvements happens all the time and those that keep informed are the one's that are successful. If you do not stay up to date on the latest trends, techniques or news, you will find yourself left behind.

17 Useful Facts about SEO

  1. If your website has a penalty Google will probably inform you in your Google Webmaster Account. Why? So you fix it.
  2. If your website is hacked, Google will even try to email you to let you know, but the site will be removed from the index until you fix it.
  3. Your Yahoo rankings can get a quick and fast boost if you submit your website to the Yahoo Directory. Why? Yahoo prefers sites that are listed in their directory.
  4. A Yahoo Directory listing, which is just one link pointing to your website is better than 50-100 links from those free directories... Even though the latter you should submit to as well.
  5. Google has a world-class staff of more than 2,668 employees known as Googlers.
  6. If you submit one article using Article Marketer, and link to a brand new website in the article bio, the new website will get indexed in less than a week guaranteed!
  7. The links you get that have the nofollow tag are only useless in terms of seo for the search engine Google. The backlinks still count for other search engines though.
  8. Optimizing your website before doing keyword research makes no sense, since keyword research is part of the optimization process.
  9. First you need to do keyword research. second optimize your website around those keywords. Not vice-versa.
  10. If you visit Google or Yahoo and search something, the competition number may be millions or billions, but the search engines only have 100 pages of results. That means they show only 1000 websites. The first 3 only get almost all the traffic.
  11. It's better to put just your main keyword in your title tag and keep it short - search engines do not show the entire tag title in search results. Maximum 67 characters.
  12. Inputting all the keywords that took you a lot of time and money (maybe) to research in the keywords tag is a mistake. Competitors can use software to extract that data to save them hours of research. They "copy" and make use of your research... Input main keywords only!
  13. Submitting your website to hundreds or thousands of search engines won't bring you any visitors.
  14. Using the search engine add url submission form won't get you indexed. To cut off the emails they were receiving search engines placed the submission form. Email such as: "Please index my website, it's about shoes". Indexing is completely automated.
  15. Search engines do not rank websites, they rank web pages.
  16. It's false that having Google AdSense or doing PPC Adwords will get you some boost in rankings - or some sort of preference in Google.
  17. Using black hat strategies is like playing scratch and win.
So there you go, hope that was very interesting.

10 Adsense Tips for Maximum CTR

  1. You should make your Adsense ads look as a part of your web page

    They shouldn't look like an Ad. People are negative to advertising. They search the internet for content not ads. Especially Banners have a less of 0,5% response. Their days are over. Imagine if you have an Adsense ad looking like the typical Banner with different colors. It will not be profitable.

  2. Text ads are better than image ads

    Like before, people are more responsive to text than images. In a way it is considered as a part of the online document and has higher CTR.

  3. No Border ads

    One of the best tricks is to erase the borders of Adsense ads and make them again having the same color with your website's background.

  4. No other advertisements

    The first reason is to be legitimate according to Google's Rules and the second more practical reason is that you do not want to distract your visitor's attention and go somewhere else without clicking your Adsense ads.

  5. Placement

    Even if you have the best Ad, people will not respond if they don't see it instantly. The best place to see the ad is the top of your web page and the next is aside your document's text. Visitors will click it more frequently since it will look like your text.

  6. Traffic

    Try to use legitimate ways of traffic. Some people use Google Adwords and other Pay per Click search engines. The problem here is to search very carefully for the right niche and keywords in order to make your campaigns profitable. Other ways is link popularity techniques like link exchange directories, software or even mass blog submission techniques. Don't use link farms and classifieds for that, because search engine's algorithms are extremely clever and they will ban your listings.

  7. Do not rely on one website

    Yes you can make money with one website but try to make as more as possible.

  8. Relevant content is King

    Articles are one of the best tactics to create huge websites that will be crawled by search engine's robots. Don't forget search engines exist to provide relevant content at first. One excellent resource to automate your article directory procedure is http://www.articleequalizer.com .You can create an article database in minutes which otherwise is time consuming and it would take you a week!

  9. Use site maps

    Google's site maps visit your site and crawl it much sooner that any other submission process. More information is here: http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps

  10. Relevant ads

    It's one of the most important factors for Adsense success. If the internet user can't find relevant ad in your page he or she won't click the ad. Would you act differently? So it's critical to create relevant resource for your web page. In order to do that, you must do the following steps.

    First the file must be saved with the appropriate name for example: Golf-Secrets.html if your article is about golf. So the webpage will be: www.yoursitesname.com/Golf-Secrets.html. Second thing you must change is your title tag. For example:

    [Title]Golf-Secrets article [/title]

    Third is the heading. The first sentence must have this heading:

    [h1]12 Golf secrets[/h1]
