Google TV Not A Hit With Major Networks

When Google TV launches, don't look for all - or maybe any - of the major networks to throw parties or send fruit baskets. A new report indicates that Google's had little luck convincing the networks to partner with it.

Jessica E. Vascellaro wrote earlier this morning, "In recent weeks, Google has met with officials of TV networks including ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC to encourage them to work with the service, according to people familiar with the matter." Which is kind of good news, since it at least shows a dialogue is taking place.

But Vascellaro then continued, "Content owners . . . are skeptical that Google can provide a business model that would compensate for potentially cannibalizing TV owners' existing broadcast businesses."

And obviously, we haven't seen any deals announced as a result of the meetings.
So Google seems to remain set when it comes to hardware partners (the list includes names like Intel, Logitech, and Sony), and a little light with respect to content. That's something consumers are almost sure to notice if the situation isn't remedied prior to Google TV's launch.

There are too many happenings everyday in the social media space for any single business owner to keep up with. Today's web is fast, and very, very innovative. The production never slows down. New tools and integrations are launched seemingly every other minute.

While I'd encourage you to sift through the headlines and social media app directories on a regular basis, I've put together a few currently unfolding storylines with big implications for business owners.

1. Why the Google Buzz Firehose Will Benefit You

Google Buzz launched to a lot of hype, but that kind of died down to some extent after a while. The privacy-related issues that it launched with didn't help. However, Google Buzz has steadily been making more moves to become more relevant to the social media universe. It already has a solid user base, and we've likely only seen the service's infancy.

A couple months ago, Google launched the Buzz API, which was a big step in the right direction. This gave developers tools to build applications around Buzz, or integrate Buzz into their existing applications, hence making Buzz more useful. Just as Twitter became more useful when more apps were built for it, Buzz has similar potential.

That potential has now increased greatly, as Google has launched the firehose for the Buzz API. This means that all public information from Buzz users is accessible by developers for use with their apps, which opens the door for many more opportunities. See how some are already using it here.

From the business owner's perspective, simply think of Buzz as another group of potential customers, in addition to Facebook and Twitter users, which will probably be integrated into many of the same apps that are already utilizing these other groups. So any promotional benefits you are seeing from said apps should increase with the addition of Buzz data, not to mention the fact that this and other factors will likely lead to the growth of Buzz itself. That brings me to the next point.

2. Google Me

For weeks, Google has been rumored to be working on a new big social network to rival Facebook. The company of course does not comment on rumors, but has not denied the concept. Details are scarce, but "Google Me" as it's commonly being referred to, will likely utilize existing Google profile pages, which are tied to Google Buzz. As I discussed in a recent article, Google is making all YouTube users connect their accounts to a Google account, which could mean that all of these Google account holders become part of Google's massive social network by default.

Without knowing Google's exact plans, it's hard to say exactly what benefits will become available that aren't already there, but you can bet that the implications will be big, and it might make all of Google's social properties more beneficial to businesses. YouTube is one of the most popular sites in the world. Add that to everyone else with a Google account.

3. Virtual Goods Increase Purchase Intent

Virtual goods are becoming more popular within social networks, and businesses are already finding ways to utilize them to not only increase brand awareness and influence positive opinions about their products, but drive purchase intent.

4. Customers Are Checking In, and This Will Become Searchable

Another hot trend in social media is checking in. You know, all of these geo-location services like Foursquare, Gowalla, Brightkite, Booyah, etc. More and more of them will continue to pop up, and let's not forget the really big names. Google has Google latitude, Twitter has Twitter Places, and Facebook will be launching something location-based one of these days soon.

Foursquare is already in talks with all of the major search engines. We don't know exactly will come of this, but it seems clear that search engines are interested in indexing this kind of data, and why wouldn't they be? Imagine if you as, as a business, could search for all of the people sharing their location in your area. That could be pretty powerful.

5. Social Media Hasn't Plateaued.

During the world cup, Twitter was breaking records for tweets. While this is related to a large-scale event, it just shows that a massive amount of people still care about Twitter, and that isn't changing anytime soon.

It was only earlier this year that Facebook announced it had surpassed 400 million users. The company is widely expected to announce that it's reached 500 million this week. I probably don't have to tell you that between these numbers, Facebook faced a huge amount of criticism in the media over privacy issues, with a lot of people talking about deleting their accounts. Facebook just kept on growing. That's not going to change anytime soon either. Facebook is becoming integrated into the very fiber of the web more and more each day (through social plug-ins, apps, etc.). There are more access points all the time (see Microsoft's new Outlook integration). It's getting harder to ignore if you're not already a user.

Google Apps Goes To India

A country that's known for its fast-developing tech industry - and for its enormous population - should soon have improved access to Google Apps. Google and Tata Communications announced a deal today that involves both Google Apps and India (for starters).

A Tata Communications representative explained in an email to WebProNews, "Tata Communications is partnering with Google to deliver the Google Apps portfolio of web-based office productivity applications to businesses in India."

That sounds promising. Google won't exactly have to overcome a lack of awareness, since the spokesperson cited Springboard Research's 2009 finding that 95 percent of Asian organizations are familiar with SaaS and Saas-based apps. India is supposed to be the fastest-growing market for SaaS in the Asia-Pacific region, as well.source: www.webpronews.com/topnews/

Then here's another benefit of the arrangement: the representative wrote, "Tata Communications will eventually extend this partnership into other emerging markets around the world," perhaps including parts of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

And a major selling point of Google Apps is of course that it's supposed to represent a low-cost alternative to traditional IT solutions, making it more appealing in markets where money is an especially important factor.

Unfortunately, Google and Tata Communications didn't provide any sort of timeframe for the expansion, or disclose the details of the current partnership.

Bing Takes Users to Mars

Microsoft has added Mars imagery to Bing Maps and to its WorldWide Telescope project. The imagery comes straight from NASA itself.

"Microsoft Research and NASA are providing an entirely new experience to users of the WorldWide Telescope, which will allow visitors to interact with and explore our solar system like never before," says Bing's Chris Pendleton. "Viewers can now take exclusive interactive tours of the Red Planet, hear directly from NASA scientists, and view and explore the most complete, highest-resolution coverage of Mars available."

"The beauty of this is that the Bing WorldWide Telescope Map App has been updated with the new imagery, as well," adds Pendleton. "This means users of Bing Maps can immediately enjoy the new imagery of the Red Planet from within their browser via our Silverlight site."

The Worldwide Telescope Mars experience can be downloaded here. On the Bing Maps Silverlight site, users can simply click the "Map Apps" button, select "WorldWide Telescope", and select "Mars" from the Collections list.

More Businesses Using Social Media To Gain Customers

More than one-third (35%) of U.S. businesses have had success using social media to attract new business, according to a new survey from Regus.

The U.S. lags slightly behind the global average, with 40 percent of businesses globally having successfully used social media for business development.

Globally, social networks are still used for their original purposes. The most popular use of social networks is staying in touch with business contacts, with 58 percent of respondents globally indicating they use networks in this way. Joining special interest groups is also popular (54 percent).

Although a number of skeptics (34 percent) believe social networking will never become a significant method of connecting to customers and prospects, 51 percent of companies globally organize, connect to or manage customer groups via social networks. Fifty four percent of firms use social networks to find useful business information. Only 22 percent of respondents had found new employment through social networking, in spite of the specific job search functions of networks such as LinkedIn.

In the U.S. specifically 28 percent of businesses have set aside a proportion of marketing budget for social networking activities. Fifty four percent of respondents used social networking to keep in touch with contacts, slightly lower than the global average. Google Sets Forum-Like Goals For Wave

Google Wave may soon make some significant strides towards winning over people who don't see the need for a new form of communication. This week, Google semi-officially endorsed an open source project that would see Wave imitate several aspects of traditional online forums.

David Crane, the founder of Debatewise, is the developer behind the push, and he was asked to write about it on the Google Wave Developer Blog. Crane argued, "A forum could be a killer app for Wave. It's a tool that people already use in huge numbers for specific purposes, are used to keeping separate to their email, and will dip in and out of as required."

Crane then continued, "Wave is similar enough for them to jump in quickly and different enough for them to get, and be hooked by, the benefits. . . . Wave could enhance and improve upon some of the most important features of a forum and through acclimatisation, will encourage them to use it for a world of other purposes."

So Crane - and/or Google - is looking for developers to help realize three goals. First, he'd like to see a way of grouping waves around subject matters. The second objective is to encourage participation using things like karma levels and trophies. Finally, he's interested in implementing trust mechanisms to distinguish between helpful and useless individuals.

It should be interesting to see how this project progresses. Google Wave still doesn't seem to have found an audience in its original form, so perhaps Google will lend Crane some additional support in order to speed up the process.

Google Sets Date Of Second Quarter Financial Report

Any of Google's investors who feel that the company has some explaining to do need only wait another nine days. Google's announced that it will report its second quarter financial results on Wednesday, July 15th.

Things could get ugly for a couple of reasons. As the graph below shows, Google's stock hasn't done at all well since March 31st, which is the last day covered by its previous report. And in fact, the graph would look even worse if we'd messied it with lines representing Microsoft and Yahoo, because their stocks lost just 20.60 percent and 14.88 percent, respectively, in the same period.

Then it's necessary to consider that Google's relationship with China appears to be deteriorating (again), jeopardizing tens or hundreds of millions of dollars in future revenue.

On the bright side, Google's maintained its dominance in the search market, and Android continues to make inroads against the iPhone. Google TV and Google Music have people excited and don't appear to be far off, either.

Also, to be quite simplistic about this, Google just has a habit of presenting impressive numbers during its earnings reports, regardless of how bad things look.

Anyway, if you're interested in learning about the financial results in real time, Google's conference call is supposed to occur at 4:30 PM New York time (so as not to mess with the stock market) and will be accessible here.

Chinese Government Denies Involvement in Google Cyberattacks

The Chinese government has officially denied any involvement in the sophisticated cyberattacks that breached Google’s security. The statements come 11 days after Google threatened to pull out of China unless it’s allowed to run its search engine uncensored.

The statement, aired during two interviews on the Chinese state’s news agency, came out strong against accusations that China itself had involvement in the attacks against Google and the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists.

Here’s what a spokesman for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said:

“Accusation that the Chinese government participated in (any) cyberattack, either in an explicit or inexplicit way, is groundless and aims to denigrate China.”

The spokesperson also stated that “China’s policy on Internet safety is transparent and consistent.” This was followed by a second interview with a spokesperson from China’s State Council (the equivalent of the U.S. Cabinet), saying that the government’s regulation of the Internet is legitimate and should be free of external influences. Most likely, this refers to recent U.S. statements calling for China to “conduct a thorough review of the cyber intrusions” of the Google attacks.

It’s no surprise that the government would deny involvement, although it has taken over a week for China to come out and say it. Regardless of today’s new developments though, the pressure on China by both Google and the U.S. government isn’t going to go away anytime soon.

Bing Might Replace Google As iPhone Search Engine

Allow us to save you a couple of moments by verifying that today isn't April 1st and that pigs haven't taken to the sky. Now, there's little left to do aside from break the news: Apple and Microsoft are supposed to be in talks to make Bing the iPhone's default search engine.

BusinessWeek's Peter Burrows and Cliff Edwards spoke to "two people familiar with the matter," and found out that Google might get bumped from its position as default provider.

The pair reported, "The talks have been under way for weeks, say the people, who asked not to be named because the details have not been made public."

Assuming this is true, it's likely that the increasing popularity of Android is one of the biggest factors to influence Apple's decision. Microsoft, which spent at least $100 million launching Bing and has Google beat by $90 billion in terms of market caps, probably offered Apple more money, too.

Still, even the unnamed sources of this rumor haven't declared that a new arrangement is far from a sure thing. So for the time being, we'll just have to watch, wait, and hope that a deal between Apple and Microsoft wouldn't be a sign of the apocalypse.

Google Cancels Nexus One Phone Launch in China

Amidst the issues that’s happening right now between Google and China, Google decided to cancel the scheduled launch of its Nexus One phone in the country this week. Citing a reliable source, AP is reporting that Google’s decision to cancel the launch of the mobile phone was indeed related to Google’s recent threat of shutting down its Chinese-based search engine since China refused to scale down it’s restriction on the search engine.

If you may have read last week, Google announced that it is lifting the censorship imposed upon their search engine due to security threat caused by it. The Chinese government kept mum about the issue and even played hard ball with Google. China issued a warning that it is ready to shut down Google’s Chinese search engine if the company would not abide by China’s rules and restrictions. Google was equally playing hard ball as well.

Although a spokeswoman for Google, Marsha Wang claimed that the launch was only postponed and will be reschedule, she however declined to give a reason for the postponement.

So, what do you think guys? Is Google’s decision to cancel the launch of the Nexus One in China part of its retaliation to the Chinese government? Is it wise for Google to cancel the launch knowing fully well that it stands to lose a huge prospective market for its not so well performing Nexus One sale in the four countries where it decided to sell the smartphone initially?

Apple Wants to Ban Nokia Imports to the US

Nokia and Apple are in the middle of an intense patent war. Apple’s latest counter-strike is a complaint filed with the International Trade Commission (ITC) seeking to block US imports of Nokia mobile devices. This comes on the heels of Nokia’s own complaint seeking to ban imports of iPhones, iPods, and MacBooks.

Bloomberg reports that Apple’s efforts to block the import of Nokia devices are tied to yet another patent infringement complaint, and that notice of the complaint appeared yesterday on the ITC’s website.

The suit, countersuit back-and-forth between Nokia and Apple began in late October of 2009 with Nokia’s original lawsuit, filed in a Delaware District Court, against Apple for wireless technology patent infringement. Apple, of course, filed a countersuit. Then in December Nokia continued on the warpath with a complaint to the ITC and followed that up with a second complaint requesting the ITC block imports of Apple products.

Given that Apple’s mobile market share continues to grow while Nokia’s is declining, we can certainly understand why Nokia would feel threatened enough to take action, and why Apple would be compelled to respond. Both companies are facing harsh penalties that could severely affect their bottom lines and stock prices.

In a statement made via text message, Nokia spokesman Mark Durrant said, “Nokia will study the complaint when it is received and continue to defend itself vigorously … However this does not alter the fact that Apple has failed to agree appropriate terms for using Nokia technology and has been seeking a free ride on Nokia’s innovation since it shipped the first iPhone in 2007.”

Bloomberg also writes that:

“The ITC is a government agency whose job is to protect the U.S. market from unfair trade practices, including patent infringement. If it agrees to consider Apple’s complaint, it could complete the investigation in about 15 months. A copy of the Apple complaint wasn’t immediately available.
The agency hasn’t yet agreed to investigate the complaint filed Dec. 29 by Espoo, Finland-based Nokia, although the ITC typically grants such requests.”

Something tells us that we haven’t seen the end of this mobile mêlée.

Work-From-Home scammers sued by Google

Google is all set to sue Pacific WebWorks, the company alleged to have created the scam ads that have fooled thousands of job hunters into thinking they were applying for work with the internet giant.

The Google-branded ads promised “up to $978 a day working from home”, but all job seekers got in return for their application was a recurring bill on their credit cards.

The scam directs applicants to pay shipping and handling costs for a free kit that will show them how to make money from home with Google. Credit cards are then charged with substantial ongoing fees, while the job seeker receives nothing.

Because the logo is displayed prominently on the ads, Google claims the unaffiliated websites are misusing its trademark to deceive unsuspecting consumers, many of whom have turned to Google to lodge complaints and ask for refunds.

The lawsuit for trademark infringement, unfair business practices and cyber piracy has been lodged against Utah-based Pacific WebWorks as well as several other unnamed defendants in the US.

Pacific WebWorks insisted Wednesday it was taken unaware by a Google Inc. lawsuit accusing the Salt Lake City company of running an elaborate scam that roped in hundreds of consumers and millions of dollars by trading on Google’s name.

“We have always cooperated with Google,” CEO Kenneth W. Bell said in a statement distributed Wednesday. “As we review this lawsuit with our counsel, we find questionable claims that the company will vigorously and responsibly defend.”

Bell and Chief Financial Officer Brett Bell did not return messages seeking further comment.

Bing Launches New Maps

Microsoft has announced the launch of a new Bing Maps beta, which incorporates Streetside and Photosynth imagery.

"The new Bing Maps experience also features innovative new mapping applications such as Twitter Maps for real-time updates by area and Local Lens featuring hyperlocal, neighborhood content," a representative for Bing tells WebProNews. There are a number of interesting apps available, which is easily the most interesting part about Bing's new Maps experience

It will be quite interesting to see what other kinds of apps become available. There is a lot of potential in that department. Watch this clip (Silverlight) about the new Bing Maps

Maps aren't the only area where Bing is doing some new things. Other new features Bing features that will be rolling out over the next few days include:

Google: Page Speed May Become a Ranking Factor in 2010

Over the course of 2009, a consistent theme that Google has been involved with is that of speed. In announcement after announcement, Google has talked about the importance of speed on the web, and how the company wants to do everything it can to make the web a faster place. Has it occurred to you that how fast your page loads may have a direct effect on how your site ranks in Google?

Don't worry, it hasn't had an impact...yet. In an interview with WebProNews, Google's Matt Cutts told us that speed may soon be a ranking factor.

"Historically, we haven't had to use it in our search rankings, but a lot of people within Google think that the web should be fast," says Cutts. "It should be a good experience, and so it's sort of fair to say that if you're a fast site, maybe you should get a little bit of a bonus. If you really have an awfully slow site, then maybe users don't want that as much."

"I think a lot of people in 2010 are going to be thinking more about 'how do I have my site be fast,' how do I have it be rich without writing a bunch of custom javascript?'" he says.

I would say that based on Matt's comments it is probably fair to assume that Google will indeed begin taking page speed into consideration as a ranking factor, although he doesn't come right out and say that they definitely will. That said, making your site faster is going to benefit your users and possibly your sales anyway, so you might as well start optimizing it for speed anyway. Then if Google really does start using this as a ranking factor, you will have a head start on boosting your rankings.

Google has generally been pretty good at providing webmasters with tools they can use to help optimize their sites and potentially boost rankings and conversions. Google recently announced a Site Speed site, which provides webmasters with even more resources specifically aimed at speeding up their pages. Some of these, such as Page Speed and Closure tools come from Google itself. But there are a number of tools Google points you to from other developers as well.

Tips for Getting Found in Real-Time Searches

Real-time search is still an emerging concept. At this point, using a real-time search engine will bring you results by time/date. This doesn’t always cater to relevancy, which is why there is still a lot of work to be done in this field.

So, if real-time results are based upon time/date, and the user’s query, it stands to reason that time and those queries are the most important components in getting your content found in these types of searches.

1. Use Keywords

This seems obvious, but use keywords in not only your content, but in your titles, and your updates. If you’re writing an article, you have to consider what people are going to include in their updates if they share it on a social network, whether this be Facebook, Twitter, or anything else.

More often than not, they are going to include the title. If the right keywords are in the title, then those keywords are also more likely to appear in any ensuing tweets, Facebook updates, etc. If someone searches for those keywords, they will be more likely to find your content in a real-time search.

The same goes for your own Tweets/status updates. Even if you are not sharing an article, if you want your update to be found, use relevant keywords. Again, obvious, but true.

2. Talk About Timely Events

Simply mentioning events that are current will put you directly into the results for any searches having to do with that topic, provided the right keywords are in play. This is a method that could and (surely is) being exploited by spammers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t provide legitimate conversation and simply put yourself on more people’s radars, without throwing links at them every time.

3. Have a Lot of Followers

If you have a lot of followers or friends on social networks, or even just readers of your blog, you are going to get more people sharing your content. The more people sharing your content, the more impressions of your content will be making their way into real time searches.

There is no easy way to instantly get a bunch of legitimate readers/followers. It will take some promotion. Provide useful content that people will link to and it will spread virally. Provide clear ways for them to follow you (like links to Facebook pages and Twitter accounts on your blog).

4. Promote Conversation

Whether on your blog or on a social network, spark conversations. Talk about topics that people are interested in. This is tied to number 2. The more conversations you are involved with, the more retweets (and equivalents on other networks) you are likely to get. And again, this means more impressions in real times searches.

5. Include Calls to Engagement

I recently talked about why there is more to retweeting than meets the eye for businesses. I mentioned the use of buttons like Tweetmeme’s and Digg’s. These are buttons you can put on articles that show the amount of retweets/diggs that article has. They kind of act as a meter for engagement.

Google News Italia Probe Expands

Google received a piece of bad news - and perhaps a laugh - today as we prepare to go into the long weekend. Here's the serious part: Italian antitrust regulators have decided to expand the focus of an investigation from the Italian version of Google News to the entire corporation.

Things began to heat up last week when an Italian newspaper federation claimed that Google would exclude papers from its normal search results when they opted out of Google News. Google Italy's offices got searched, and the concept of an $18.5 million fine was mentioned.

Now, according to an AGI article, Italy's antitrust authority has stated, "On the basis of inspections by the authority, it has been found that the management of the Google News Italia service, currently under a preliminary investigation, was handled by Google Inc."

What brilliant detective work, right? Sherlock Holmes has been reincarnated in Rome.

Still, given a choice between chuckling at obvious statements and not facing an inquiry, Google would probably pick the second option. The fact that this investigation's picked up speed in just one week isn't a great sign.

Borland Tools Update Includes Windows 7 Support

Embarcadero, the developer tools vendor that acquired the legacy tools from Borland Software in 2006, will issue its first big upgrade to Delphi and C++Builder later this month with the release of RAD Studio 2010.

The RAD Studio 2010 suite launches August 25, with upgrades to the Delphi, C++ and Delphi Prism tools. Delphi Prism is Delphi specifically tuned for writing .Net applications using the Visual Studio Shell, instead of stand-alone apps like traditional Delphi.

One of the biggest changes is the addition of support for Windows 7. Support for touch/multi-touch and mouse-based gestures is also included which extends to older versions of Windows. Thanks to Embarcadero's own gesture libraries, Delphi 2010 can import code written from its 1.0 version back in the 1990s and turn it into a gesture-based application.

"Developers will be able to touch, multi-touch or gesture-enable any app they create," Mike Rozlog, senior director of Delphi Solutions for Embarcadero, told InternetNews.com. "If Windows 7 isn't there, we use our own engine for support in Windows 2000, XP and Vista. So it will work across all Microsoft platforms."

Gesture-based apps allow for things like using swiping motions with the mouse to perform certain activities, like backing up a page in a browser. It can also be used for non-standard characters, like foreign languages that use symbols.

For Windows 7 developers, the suite supports the Windows 7 API for native touch and multi-touch applications, allowing developers to utilize Windows 7's Natural Input Libraries and Direct2D graphics.

A quick start on middleware apps

Also new in this release is improved support for multi-tiered infrastructure. Originally introduced as Midas in Delphi 3, then renamed Datasnap, the multi-tier structure makes it simple to immediately begin building middleware apps with the business logic exposed to other services or to a server or client front end.

What is Wrong with Reciprocal Linking

Reciprocal linking has been so abused by webmasters and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) experts (term used loosely when it comes to reciprocal linking) that the larger search engines have begun the process of disregarding reciprocal links as irrelevant.

Does that mean you will be penalized for having some? No, you won't be penalized (unless they lead to 'bad neighborhoods') but you will also not gain anything from having them either.

What has brought this downfall of reciprocal linking? Automation and spam sites but mostly automation. Automation allowed for membership sites to be created where trading can happen at the click of a button and your site is updated automatically with the new link page including the new link. Automation also allowed for finding link partners to send generic emails to in the hopes that they would take the bait and link back to you in return for your link to them.

Now, I like automation when done in a responsible and sensible way. But much of the reciprocal linking automation was about getting as many links as possible as fast as possible. Obviously, unless you are YouTube or MySpace, this is very unnatural and has been easy for the search engines to include in their algorithms.

Many webmasters threw all senses out the window in their quest for reciprocal links. They would go after anyone and everyone rather than finding related and quality partners to share links. Some even would say that they did it for the traffic, except that most of the sites that they traded links with didn't have any traffic and they were trading links to get higher search engine placement to get more traffic.

Another fatal flaw of reciprocal linking is the unscrupulous webmaster who buries your link on a page that will never be visited by a human visitor and probably not a search engine bot either. Most webmasters were not taking the time to actually see if the page their link was placed on could be found by the visitors to the parent site and therefore didn't get any search engine benefit or any natural traffic benefit. However, because you were a honest webmaster the link from your site did pass page rank and visitors to the other site and therefore the unscrupulous benefited greatly from laziness.

Now, most recently, there have been the 3-way reciprocal linking requests. This is still a reciprocal request and is still very easy for a search engine to identify. In fact, you would need to have hundreds if not thousands of web sites that you were rotating your 3rd site links through for 3-way linking to be difficult to detect. When webmasters explain it they make it sound like it is better than regular reciprocal linking but the reality is that it is more spammy than reciprocal linking because you are intentionally doing it to achieve better search engine placements.

So, my recommendation is to stay away from all reciprocal linking (at least in the traditional sense).

Well, what's left you may ask? The answer really goes back to more traditional marketing methods for creating traffic to a campaign. In the web world, our campaign is usually to gain more traffic and if we get higher search engine placement to get that traffic then it is a bonus.

All of the following, create long lasting 1-way backlinks that may come from highly respected authority sites and therefore carry more value in the search engine algorithms.

To start with, there is the tried and true method of submitting your site to 'hand-edited' web directories. Although not all of them are hand-edited a vast majority are. Which also means that the free web directories have a back log that may be a couple of days to a couple of months. Even still, it is worth submitting to as many directories as you can. Don't expect much traffic from this method but that's ok because we are really looking for the 1-way backlink.

Next, would be article submissions/marketing. Write individual articles or create a series of articles and submit them to the major article repositories. Article marketing doesn't usually have an immediate effect on traffic but will build links over time as a well written article will be republished on many sites, blogs, and newsletters.

I usually recommend directory submissions and article marketing take place first because they take the longest to actually gain momentum. But once they do it can be an incredible experience.

Next come the more time consuming but more immediate techniques. They are signature usage, site development, social bookmarking and context linking.

Signature usage is really simple. It is the task of commenting on blogs or forums that are related to your sites general topic. The benefit is a self-placed back link to your own site. These links can usually even be to pages on the interior of your web site not just the home page. One of the best techniques to generate traffic from your signature is to offer link followers a discount or unique benefit just for following that link.

Site development is simply the process of making your site attractive and friendly to visitors. Sometimes this is called Visitor Experience Optimization (VEO). VEO becomes more and more important as your site gains more and more visitors. Your goal is to have a site that keeps a visitor there as long as possible. It will also increase the likely hood that anonymous webmasters will place links on their site to your site without a request from you - a 1-way link.

Social bookmarking is one of those things that webmasters may do that will make them feel funny and seem like they aren't doing the right thing. It's really OK as long as it is done without complete automation and without the intent to spam the bookmarking sites. What you are really trying to do is submit a vote for your own sites' pages (don't submit every single page of your site) into the bookmarking sites. Hopefully someone else will see your submission and agree with your vote and so on and so on. This technique will not work with every web site but it is worth at least submitting your pages to a group of bookmarking sites with some hope...

Finally, for those reciprocal request that you will undoubtedly continue to receive, contextual linking is what you want. Even if it is a reciprocal link between sites, if it is embedded within the normal context of the other webmasters web site it will be more trusted than a standard reciprocal link. Basically it will appear more natural to the user and to the search engine bots. Obviously for it to make sense, any reciprocal linking should only be done between sites that are related in some way and please don't make every incoming link appear the same. Change the text of the link and the context of the paragraph or page the link comes from so that it once again appears natural.

Of course, even if you do all of these things perfectly, there is no guarantee that you will be on the first page of any search engine result pages. But you will at least have a chance and will outrank a vast majority of the competition sites in the coming years.

How It all began

I can't help but believe in destiny when I think of the way I got into SEO. Around five years back, when I took up my first job on Internet marketing and SEO here in Kolkata, I hardly had any clue about what is SEO, or how to optimize a website..for that matter, at that point of time there were very few people in kolkata who knew anything about SEO.

Though I had a First Class in my Hotel Mgmt course and also a job offer from Hyatt Regency, Kolkata, I just felt that hoteleering is not for me .. I was kind of frustrated with rejections from otherjobs (mostly call centers) and was looking for an alternative avenue when I came across the advertisement from 123greetings.com - they were looking for people in their internet marketing team and i made it through with them-- then it all began..

It was just three of us at that point and then everyday new members joined their marketing team and the only way we could know about SEO , link exchange and other internet marketing was to study..yes, that is something I hate, but I had to.. and surprisingly enough, I was never bored studying about SEO, Inetrnet marketing, link exchange and related stuff.. (even today!). That was a golden opportunity....being one of the pioneer members of the SEO and internet marketing team of 123greetings.com gave me a lot of scope to study and experiement and learn the basics.

While doing this job, I got some offers from other smaller web dev companies in Kolkata and started working as a freelance SEO / SEO consultant with them. But the money was too less.. :( I am sure most freshers today would prefer to sit back at home rather than working for someone for such a meager salary.. so I was in dilemma, I loved SEO but I needed more money and atlast the hunt was on.. I needed a new job....

Cracked interviews with some call centers and moved on to work with them but didn't give up on SEO, I was working as a SEO consultant/ SEO freelancer for the Kolkata based web development companies..and always kept myself updated about the changes and updates in the search engines. I spent a nice time in Call centers in Mumbai (almost 2 years), earned good money.. but my heart was lying in something else , I wanted to come back to SEO and Internet marketing...

In October 2004 when I was back in Kolkata for a vacation, one of the companies, Digital Avenues, for which I used to freelance as SEO offered me to join them as a full timer. The offer was there for me for the last 6 months but I never gave it a thought but this time.. they had something really good to offer.. in addition, I was allured by the options of working as a full time SEO as well as staying in my favorite city Kolkata.. thought about the whole thing for a couple of days and then I agreed.

That again marked the beginning of a new chapter in my career and life.. Instead of giving him a short answer I thought I would make a post here on HTML color codes so that it can be of help to so many other people who are also stuck with issues and doubts about these strange looking hexadecimal color codes.

Though I mentioned them as "strange looking hexadecimal codes" they are not really strange and are rather pretty logically formed. In HTML, at times we use names of colors like, red, blue, green etc but more often than not we use Hexadecimal color codes to add more precise colors on the web pages.Let's look at what is the logic behind Hexadecimal HTML color codes..

HTML color codes are formed basically of three primary colors - Red , Green and Blue, otherwise referred to as RGB. In all the hexa decimal color codes you will typically see six characters, for example #ff6633 - in this case the first two character defines value for red, the next two for Green and the last two for blue. If you would go through a HTML color code chart you will notice that lower numbers and letters display darker colors ( Black: #000000 ). So if we would like to have a bright red color we would have the code as #FF0000 - which would mean to the browser maximum Red ( FF) No Blue (00), No green (00). If you can keep a few basic color codes in mind you can probably do some permutation and combination based on the above mentioned facts to get other color variations. It is important that we append the # before the color code.

How to get the exact HTML color codes

a) When you are creating a webpage from a design, open it in Photoshop and use the color picker tool to click on the color of your choice, it will show you the HTML color code for that. A color picker tool is available on all graphic design applications and this is the easiest way to do this.

b) HTML color code charts - Yes, readymade HTML color code charts are available on the web. A small Google search and you can find a lot of them. Some of them list almost all possible colors and variations along with their hexadecimal code for HTML. So a simple search and then a copy paste job can resolve the issue.
